What does a low result mean?
Smaller red blood cells (microcytosis) are very commonly caused by low bodily iron stores.
What does a high result mean?
Larger red blood cells (macrocytosis) often relate to lower vitamin B12 or folate intake, or active red cell renewal.
Questions ready for your doctor
Bring these questions to your next consultation to discuss with your healthcare practitioner:
- Does cell size suggest checking iron or vitamin levels?
- Should we test serum B12 and folate?
- Is any follow-up blood count warranted?
